Reflection on practice and in practice

The stories in this series were created at a workshop in early 2017 at the University of Hertfordshire. Members of research and teaching staff in the school of nursing came together to explore the potential of digital storytelling as a tool for reflection on their own personal/professional stories.

Kim’s research into academic dropout caused by nursing students’ fears around death is interrupted by her own diagnosis of Grade 3 bowel cancer. Her journey through surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy leaves her with a stoma and a bag. Returning to work, but then faces the challe
nge of one student telling here that a stoma bag is “the most disgusting thing in the world” and the delight at being better able to support a student whose own mother has been diagnosed with bowel cancer. She learns that, when she’s brave enough to share her story, deep connections are made that help her support others, and that death, for her, is not something to be frightened of.
